WHO TO TRUST

                                                                 Martin Rooney

Let’s talk about social media.

Everyday we are swamped with new eye-catching health and fitness posts. These posts can be inspiring and informative but they can also take a toll on our mental health. Furthermore, in a new study, research found that nearly two-thirds of the most popular “fitfluencers lacked credentials and credibility. The New York Times has recently cited the study to further open dialogue offering advice on how to cure and find credible sources of information.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, BenBruno and other fitness professionals are also warning their community to be wary of the information they consume on social media.

A few consistent pieces of advice, I’ve been reading to cure the information we see every day are: to limit the number of “fitfluencers”, to look for credentials and most importantly to ensure these professionals are actively participating in their field of practice and lastly to do a gut check to verify if we align with the values we are being fed.

How do I know if a source is credible?

A few things to look at:

  • Who’s the author, his background and current credentials?

  • How recent is the publication?

  • Is the information based on research or personal opinion?

  • What’s the author’s purpose?

Here are a few sources of information I like to read that you might find interesting:
