Easy Homemade Broth

I’m that person in the aisle at the grocery store, indecisively reading food labels and pondering which brand to choose. I always go for the ones with the least amount of ingredients, but when it comes to broth, I can never find a good one. They all taste flat to me, regardless of the price. Maybe I’m picky, or my taste buds are too “refined” lol, but hear me out: before you spend another $10 on tasteless broth, consider this.

  • Invest in higher-quality meat and veggies.

  • Pick fresh herbs, lemons, and limes.

  • Make your own broth using the protein and veggies you chose.

Here’s how you can give your pot of water delicious flavor with just a few ingredients:

When starting your soup or stew, add one peeled onion, a carrot, a celery stalk, a tomato, a few garlic cloves, a couple thyme springs and a bay leaf or two. If you are making a larger soup feel free to double the quantity of veggies, let everything simmer and remove once the veggies are cooked. Once the broth veggies are removed continue making your soup of choice. I always add the juice of a lemon or lime once the soup has finished cooking for a slight sour taste. Top your soup with fresh herbs, and voilà! It’s ready to be enjoyed.

Here’s a tip for a clear, see-through broth: be ready to remove the foam that gathers on top of your pot as the meat starts to cook—this only takes a couple of minutes with a spoon. Also, don’t forget to add salt every time you add veggies to your soup.

If you have a trick for making delicious broth, I’d love to hear it!
